Ultrasound Specialist

Fetal imaging is one of the most common uses of ultrasounds, but this diagnostic tool actually has many applications. Medical Arts OB/GYN offers ultrasound services to patients in San Mateo, California, and the surrounding areas.

How Does Ultrasound Imaging Work?

Ultrasound, also known as sonography, uses sound waves to develop images of what's going on inside the body without the need for making an incision. Unlike other imaging techniques, ultrasound uses no radiation. This makes it a preferred method for viewing a developing fetus during pregnancy.

How Is an Ultrasound Performed?

An instrument called a transducer is used to record echoes of sound waves to determine the size, shape, and consistency of soft tissues and organs. This information is used to produce images onto a computer screen for the ultrasound technician or sonographer to interpret the ultrasound images. This technology can help diagnose and treat certain conditions. It is advisable to wear comfortable clothing for your ultrasound appointment. And, depending on the type of ultrasound you are receiving, your doctor may ask you to not eat or drink in the hours leading up to the ultrasound. After the ultrasound is performed, the images will be reviewed for any sign of abnormalities. Should a read require a follow up, your doctor will discuss the next steps, and schedule a follow-up appointment with you.

How Is Ultrasound Used in Pregnancy?

Ultrasound imaging is most often used to monitor the growth of a child during pregnancy. These scans can provide an expectant mother with the first view of her unborn child.

The main use of ultrasonography are in the following areas:

  • Diagnosis and confirmation of early pregnancy
  • Vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy
  • Determination of age and size
  • Diagnosis of any malformation
  • Placental localization
  • Multiple pregnancies

What Other Tests Are Ultrasounds Used For?

  • bladder
  • brain (in infants)
  • eyes
  • gallbladder
  • kidneys
  • liver
  • ovaries
  • pancreas
