STD Testing

How Do I Know if Need an STD Test?

If you think you might have an STD it can cause concern and worry. The best thing to do is get tested as soon as possible to quell your fears. Some symptoms of STDs can include:

  • Sores on the genitals
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Itching
  • Burning during urination

Some STD’s do not show signs or symptoms. If you believe you have been exposed, getting tested is the best way to find out for certain if you have an STD.

How Are STD tests Done?

STD tests are not part of a regular physical, or Pap smear, and must be scheduled with your health care provider. There is no one test for all the variations of STD’s. Tests are specific to the different infections. Speaking with your health care provider will help you decide which STD tests are needed.

These tests can include:

  • A physical exam looks for signs of infection, such as a rash, discharge, sores, or warts in or around the genitals or affected area.
  • A blood sample is used to provide a more in-depth analysis than a physical exam alone.
  • A urine sample might be requested to test the urine for signs of infection.
  • Discharge, tissue, cell, or a saliva sample is generally collected to be observed more closely under a microscope.

Sometimes a diagnosis can be made immediately, at other times, the samples may be sent out to a lab for further tests.

How Are STDs Treated?

Depending on the type of infection there are a few different ways STD’s can be treated. Treatment may consist of antibiotics or antiviral drugs. However, some forms of STD’s cannot be cured and treatment will need to be continued to keep symptoms from returning. Practicing safe sex or abstinence lessens your chances of developing an STD.
