Minimally invasive surgery is a technique surgeons use when operating that causes less injury to the body than with open surgery. This type of surgery can be used for many different conditions and is generally safer and allows you to recover faster, and heal with less pain and scarring. Minimally invasive surgery is performed on an outpatient basis or, in some instances, requires only a short hospital stay.
Minimally invasive surgery techniques are as varied as the conditions they are used on. They include:
Robotic surgery - During robotic-assisted surgery, surgeons operate robotic arms from a console allowing it to take the place of actual hand movements and can make movements very precise. The benefits of minimally invasive robotic surgery can include smaller incisions, less pain, lower risk of infection, and less scarring.
Endoscopic surgery - These are minimally invasive procedures that utilize an endoscope to reach internal organs through very small incisions. During endoscopic surgery, the surgeon uses a thin, flexible tube with a video camera through a small incision allowing the surgeon to see inside the patient’s body and operate through a much smaller incision than would otherwise be required for traditional open surgery.
Laparoscopy – One of the first types of minimally invasive surgery techniques. The surgery is done through one or more small incisions, using small tubes and tiny video cameras and surgical instruments.
