What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is a technique surgeons use when operating that causes less injury to the body than with open surgery. This type of surgery can be used for many different conditions and is generally safer and allows you to recover faster, and heal with less pain and scarring. Minimally invasive surgery is performed on an outpatient basis or, in some instances, requires only a short hospital stay.

Are There Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery techniques are as varied as the conditions they are used on. They include:

Robotic surgery - During robotic-assisted surgery, surgeons operate robotic arms from a console allowing it to take the place of actual hand movements and can make movements very precise. The benefits of minimally invasive robotic surgery can include smaller incisions, less pain, lower risk of infection, and less scarring.

Endoscopic surgery - These are minimally invasive procedures that utilize an endoscope to reach internal organs through very small incisions. During endoscopic surgery, the surgeon uses a thin, flexible tube with a video camera through a small incision allowing the surgeon to see inside the patient’s body and operate through a much smaller incision than would otherwise be required for traditional open surgery.

Laparoscopy – One of the first types of minimally invasive surgery techniques. The surgery is done through one or more small incisions, using small tubes and tiny video cameras and surgical instruments.

What Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Treatment Options Are Available?

Gynecological surgery has evolved over the past few years to include treatment options that are both effective and time efficient. The emphasis has been on minimally invasive and noninvasive options for a variety of gynecological conditions. One of the main goals of minimally invasive surgery in obstetrics is to avoid making a large abdominal incision. This has many benefits to the patient, including:

  • less pain
  • less blood loss
  • faster and easier recovery time
  • decreased scar tissue formation
