What Types of Birth Control Are Available?

Birth control refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy. The options for birth control are wide and vast. Choosing which one works best for you will come down to personal discretion between you and your partner. Some of the most common methods of birth control include condoms, IUDs (intrauterine device), birth control pills, the rhythm method, vasectomy, and tubal ligation.

What Is NEXPLANON?

Nexplanon is a method of birth control used as an implant. It is a small, soft, flexible, and only four centimeters in length, making it comfortable and discreet. Your health care provider will place the Nexplanon implant under the skin on the inside of your upper arm, hiding it from view. Once inserted, Nexplanon is over 99 percent effective and provides pregnancy prevention for up to three years. Nexplanon can be removed at any time by your health care provider but by the end of the third year it is required to be replaced by a new Nexplanon insert for continued contraceptive protection.

What Are the Advantages to Using the Nexplanon Implant?

Using the Nexplanon implant as your method of birth control is a safe, simple, and convenient option. Contraceptive implants become a preferred choice for women because they offer effective, long-term contraceptive results. Some of the other benefits include:

  • Ability to remove the insert any time, followed by a quick return to fertility
  • Eliminates the need to interrupt sex for contraception
  • Provides relief from menstrual pain and pelvic pain caused by endometriosis
  • Can be used while breastfeeding
  • Can be used by women who cannot take estrogen as it contains none
  • It gives continuous long-lasting birth control without sterilization
  • No more daily, weekly, or monthly dosing routine

If you are unsure of your birth control needs, or have questions about Nexplanon or other forms of contraception, call or visit the office today. The qualified staff and physicians at Medical Arts Obstetrics and Gynecology are happy to help you.
